The Lamy Joy AL Calligraphy fountain pen is made from plastic with a soft black lacquer finish and a silver color aluminum cap. The pen has an ergonomic grip, a flexible spring clip and an italic stainless steel nib making it perfect for calligraphy writing on letters, invitations, menus, certificates and more.
This cartridge/converter fountain pen comes with one Lamy T10 blue ink cartridge. If you would like to use bottled fountain pen inks you can also purchase a Lamy LZ28 ink converter.

This pen has a black resin or plastic barrel with an aluminum cap. You can see the brushed aluminum color. And it has a metal clip on the pen, a glossy black finish, opens nice and easily, great for holding in your pocket. And the top of the cap has a plastic ring with a cross there in the middle. On the sides of the barrel of the pen, two viewing windows so you can see the ink levels for the pen. The Lamy logo is engraved on the barrel, and on the backside is 'Germany', raised. It has a small, glossy black piece of plastic that wraps around the end of the barrel. You can also see the taper in the barrel, two flat sides and rounded sides, and that tapers towards the end, nice long barrel.
The cap is compression fitted. It snaps off. You can post that cap if you would like to, don't necessarily need to. You can see the section on the pen where you can grip the pen and hold it. It has these two little channels for your fingers. It's an ergonomic grip, makes it easier to hold. And you can see the nib on the pen. This happens to be the 1.9mm. It comes in a 1.1mm, 1.5mm, or a 1.9mm. That just designates the width across. This happens to be the 1.9mm, which is going to be the widest. So different nib sizes will allow for different line variations, whether you want... This is going to be the most line variation because it is the widest of the nibs.
This is a cartridge converter style pen. You can add a converter to it, doesn't come with it. This is the LZ26 if you want to add it. This is the ink cartridge that comes with it, it's a Lamy ink cartridge, and it has a small band here you have to remove, so you pull that off the pen and then you insert the cartridge into the pen. This is just the band that keeps that cartridge from being inserted during packaging.

For many years I have used a very much more expensive italic calligraphy fountain pen. I have used it so much that it finally wore out and does not give the fine to broad pen strokes anymore. In searching for something to replace it I bought this Lamy Joy AL Calligraphy pen. I was concerned that, because it was more affordable, that it might not be as good, I was very pleasantly surprised that it fit the bill perfectly. It is comfortable in the hand. The flat portions of the finger grip make it easier to keep the pen at the required angle for italic calligraphy, instead of having to check the angle whenever putting down and picking up the pen again. It writes smoothly and most importantly for me, it gives me the fine to broad strokes that I need for my work.
