Lamy Safari Fountain Pens Reviews

Once I got the ink to flow I was very delighted at how smooth this pen writes and draws. Very lightweight and comfortable to use. I have found my self looking for excuses to use it more.

I was pleasantly surprised, especially by the excellent writing experience. The nib needed absolutely no adjustment, which is not always the case in a pen this inexpensive. The ink flow is just right. I have small hands and the pen [un-posted] fits me perfectly. Very nice pen!

I need to refill this pen now and I hope I have ordered the right refill, but I absolutely love this pen.

The Lamy Safari is by far my favorite of the three fountain pens I've purchased (so far) from PenChalet.com. As a newspaper reporter, I spend a lot of time writing notes. The tools of my trade – pen and notepad – take a lot of abuse from daily use, and must work in difficult conditions, from rain to snow to pounding sun. I've found the Lamy Safari to be tough and dependable, whether I’m using it in a courtroom or at a crime scene. Most importantly, it is fun to write with. It turns a routine task into a small pleasure. I've even had sources compliment the pen itself, which cuts the tension a bit and leads to a better interview. I highly recommend the Lamy Safari to anyone looking for a workhorse fountain pen that is also handsome and durable.

One big problem with Lamy/Safari is inconsistency. This was the third time I bought this pen, and I finally got lucky. The other two times before this, the nibs were way too scratchy and flow was super dry.

I purchased two neon yellow Safari's with 1.5 mm italic nibs to use for nature sketching. These have been a joy to use in the field equipped with converters and loaded with some of my favorite ink concoctions. Just can't beat the price! The nibs are capable of quite a variety of line widths and fit my needs rather well. About to talk myself into ordering three more at this price.

My first fountain pen was the Lamy Safari hot pink with F nib because it was on special sale the week I was perusing for that specific color. (Thanks Pen Chalet for the great deal!) I'm not typically a pink person, but the solid hot pink of this pen is bold and not girly.

I chose the F nib to begin with since I'd never had a fountain pen before. As soon as I broke through the cartridge and started writing, the smoothness blew me away. It was a magical moment, and honestly (for better or worse, mostly better) started me down the path to learning more and more about fountain pens. The nib was smooth, did not need much time to get the ink flowing through, and I wrote many journal entries with that pen. I still do.

About 2 weeks later, I purchased the charcoal black with an EF nib. I love the feel of this Safari because it is slightly more textured. The hot pink is a smooth, glossy plastic. This charcoal black is matte. The EF nib that came with it was also black, which gave this pen a stunning look. Sleek and strong. I personally found the EF nib a bit too scratchy for my personal taste. I like my ink to flow smoothly and not have much feedback from the nib itself. I like to feel like I'm gliding across the page. I love the shading and pooling of the ink that's more visible with the F nib. The EF nib would be better for certain types of lower quality paper to avoid feathering and bleeding, so I still use it regularly.

I also bought another Safari for one of my friends to try, and she loves it as well. The quality of these Lamy pens is consistent, and they have such a wide range of options for colors, nib sizes, and converters to expand beyond just cartridge inks. A great introduction to fountain pens.

This was the first Lamy pen I purchased after writing about 5 lines with the one my daughter had ordered. Always seem to have this pen close at hand.
