The pen comes with a plastic cap and barrel, with a chrome-colored clip, kind of a trademark, Lamy clip; nice, big, wide clip, it makes it easy to get in and out of your pockets. At the top of the pen, we have a small coin that looks like the head of a screw or bolt, and then on the bottom side, we just have a small, little groove or channel.
The Lamy Safari has a unique shape. It has a flat side on each side of the barrel, a rounded barrel with some flat sides. Then it has a small viewing area where you can see inside and see the ink in the pen.
Now this pen has a compression fit cap. It has a unique shape on the grip section, which makes it real nice to hold the pen. It has a stainless steel nib, a chrome-colored nib. The cap on the pen can be posted. It's a little long with it posted, but it is a lightweight pen because it is made out of plastic material. There's also the Lamy Logo there on the end of the barrel of the pen, kind of subtle and hard to see at times.
To exchange the refill or add the ink to the pen, there's an ink refill cartridge included with the pen. So you remove this small, cardboard band that's included with the pen, and then screw this back on to add the ink to the pen. So this is simply for packaging, this little band that you remove.
The Lamy Safari is an inexpensive fountain pen, a great looking pen. It works really well. It's a German made product. Get your Lamy Safari Fountain Pen at PenChalet.com.

This is the Lamy Safari Fountain Pen. It comes in a black, cardboard box. We have the Lamy Logo, here on the outside, with some small channels or grooves cut in the box, so you can see inside. I ordered an Extra Fine because a Fine nib was unavailable at the time of my order. Well, that turned out to be a blessing. Lamy Safari Extra Fine really writes like a Fine nib and writes beautifully. It has some tooth and gives you plenty of feedback, which I like very much (similar to Sailor or Platinum gold nibs). Another point I would like to make is that Pen Chalet went the extra mile to honor my order when I had to cancel the other item in the order due to a logistic delay even though it didn't meet the minimum free-shipping amount. Thank you, Pen Chalet.

Bottom Line Up Front: Great starter pen for the price. It is a Lamy Safari, so you know (or should if you have held one before) that it is well made, utilitarian in its design, and whether you love or hate the grip. Color choices are subjective.
Product Quality: 5 – Excellent
I know that the term “German Engineering” is often overused, but there is a reason for it. While the pen is made from ABS Plastic and is extremely light, it feels solidly built. No matter what I do, the pen feels solid in my hand. Even when I knock it around a little, I do not feel I have to worry about the nib or the barrel. The cap feels solidly placed when capped onto the barrel. The fact that Lamy places a spacer between the barrel and the feed to ensure the cartridge does not accidentally open while in transit shows the level of thought and tolerances put into the pen.
Product Functionality: 4 - Above Average
Where the pen falters a little is the grip. The triangular grip is either a love it or hate it situation. I love it as I don’t have to think about where to put my fingers when I uncap the pen, I just plug and write. What I don’t like is the size of the grip. It feels a bit small for people with larger hands (which is kind of hypocritical as the reason the smaller feeling grip is the triangular placement I like, go figure). You can tell from the way the pen is designed that it was made to be very practical. Snap cap, simple metal clip, ABS plastic where you can see the position where mold finished, the pen was made to be simple, practical, and yet reliable.
While I have had issues with their chrome plated nibs, I have yet to have any issues with their black nibs and have made sure that all of my Safaris sport a black nib. Furthermore, the ease of which you can swap out nibs not only adds to their functionality, but also value.
Finally, the amount of ink that their cartridges hold is hard to beat in comparison to some other manufacturers. And if you like using bottled ink, you can do what I do and just clean out the cartridge and use a syringe to put your bottled ink into the cartridge, thereby having a large amount of your favorite ink.
Product Style: 4 – Above Average
The pen was made to be simple, practical, and yet reliable. Can either be a plus or minus, depending on your feelings. But the fact that Lamy comes out with different limited editions, there is little denying that you can find a pen that meets your color palate!
Product Value: 5 – Excellent
When you consider the price of the pen, the ease with which you can swap out nibs, the solidly built design, and the plethora of colors the Safari can come in, I think the value is nigh unbeatable. Further, with the right discounts you can get the pen for a really good price.

This pen writes very smooth and feels good in your hand. My only complaint is that the ink is very wet and that causes some bleed through. But as a beginner in the pen world I still love it and would recommend.

It writes smoothly. The ink window is useful. I found that the nib is a little broad from what I expected so if the paper is just a little porous then the writing is not as crisp as I would like it to be. But that is not the defect in the pen but a defect in the type of paper used.

The Safari is a must try for every person using fountain pens. Even if they are not your favorite style or writing pen, I believe everyone should at least try one and see for themselves. How easy it is to swap nib sizes and the ability to include the calligraphy nibs make this model at only ~$30 a no brainer. Add the color variety on top of that and you have a reason to start collecting them.

When I first saw these pens, I thought they were hideous. Then I got curious and had to get one. I've since ordered a white and a charcoal Safari here, and I'm always using them. For my purposes (teaching and creative writing), there's a lot to like:
-lightweight body - easy on the hand for extended writing
-smooth nibs that make writing nearly effortless
-a big sturdy clip that actually does what it's supposed to do (without mangling my shirt pockets)
-a useful ink window
-generous-sized cartridges(if not using converters)
-durability (I mean, these WERE built with school in mind...)
-relatively dry flow makes wetter inks usable on more kinds of paper
-nib-swapping is fairly affordable and extremely easy
-great lineup of colors - something for everyone
Now they're not perfect, mind you. The nibs are usually quite good but can vary widely. The fine on my white Safari is silky smooth but writes pretty broad for my tastes (I often reverse-write with it on low-quality paper); meanwhile, the black fine on my charcoal Safari is a true fine, still smooth but with some pleasant feedback. (And if you don't like your nib...good thing you can easily get a replacement one and don't have to buy a whole new pen!)
You also have to know whether that triangular section will give you problems or not. Some love it, some hate it. It's no dealbreaker for me, so I'll continue to use and enjoy my Safaris.

FAQs about the Lamy Safari
Q:
WHAT IS THE BROWN BAND FOR? IT LOOKS CHEAP AND I DON'T LIKE IT AT ALL. IS THIS BAND TO PREVENT INK FROM FLOWING OUT? DOES IT COVER UP THE SCREW TO UNLOCK THE PEN? CAN WE REMOVE IT WITHOUT AFFECTING THE PEN? ON MY PEN, THE BROWN RING SLOWS WHEN I CLOSE THE PEN.A:
The brown ring is meant to be removed on the first use. It is there initially to prevent the ink cartridge from being pushed all the way into place before purchase. Q:
I'm looking to the Lamy Safari, charcoal, fine nib, and I've got a few questions.Does the pen come with a black nib or must I purchase the black nib separately?
May I order additional Lamy nibs and are they interchangeable?
I would like the option to ink fill, what converter would I need?
Many thanks and I'm looking forward to being a fountain pen enthusiast!
A:
The Lamy Safari Fountain pen in the charcoal color comes with a black color nib and you do not have to purchase one separately. You can however order additional Lamy replacement nibs if you want to change to a silver color nib or a different size. They slide off the front of the feed and are easily changed. The Lamy Safari fountain pen does not come with a converter included but you can purchase the Lamy LZ24 converter for the pen so you can use bottled inks.
Q:
I'm buying a pen for some one I do not know what is needed. It is for a beginner I was told to get a lamy fountain pen 1.1 nib safari Is this different pieces or one penA:
The Lamy Safari comes with a nib and an ink cartridge. If you want the 1.1mm nib you would have to buy that separate and then you can swap nibs. The 1.1mm is a broader nib for varied line widths. you can also add a Lamy LZ24 ink converter to use bottled ink or you can buy Lamy LT ink cartridges for additional refills for the pen.Q:
can the Lamy Safari fountain pen be modified for use with a Lamy LZ 24 converter?A:
Yes the Lamy Safari fountain pen can accept a Lamy LZ24 converter if you would rather use bottled ink instead of the Lamy L10 cartridges.
