One of my favorite inks! It looks pink...then it looks purple...I can't decide which because this lovely magenta type ink has excellent shading and can be slightly different looking depending on the paper. Always need to keep a bottle of this on hand.

Although a bit pricey, I love Iroshizuku inks! They make any pen feel/write better. One of my favorite colors so far is Yama-budo. It is dark and rich enough to be easily legible in fine nibs, yet it isn't a boring color. It shows a tiny little bit of shading when I put it in my Pilot Custom Heritage '92 pen (nib MF).

I currently own 30 colors of Pilot Iroshizuku ink (the 24 core shades as of mid-2025 plus the three that were discontinued in 2022 and the three discontinued in 2024. With a couple of exceptions, I love them all. Each is well behaved, and performs well in every pen I've used them in. Kon-peki is my favorite blue of any ink on the market, and yama-budo is a stunning magenta. Other personal favorites are ama-iro, shin-kai, shin-ryoku, and murasaki-shikibu. I colors I like least are hotaru-bi, hana-ikada, and to-ro, three faded pastels that are less suitable for writing and probably more popular with artists who use them for shading. My one real complaint surrounds an incredible color that Pilot inexplicably discontinued in 2022. Tsukushi was my favorite brown, rich and very appealing on the page. Pen Chalet is my main source for Iroshizuku inks because they're sold at a discounted price, and my shipments always arrive in a sturdy box.

Yu-Yake, meaning “sunset” in Japanese, is a perfect name for this vibrant ink from Pilot’s Iroshizuku line. It’s a warm, golden orange that somehow manages to feel both bold and gentle—like the last glow of sunlight before dusk settles in. I tested it in my Monteverde MP1 OmniFlex fountain pen, and the experience was nice and smooth. The ink flows easily and consistently, which really brought out the flex nib’s expressive qualities. I got some beautiful natural line variation, and even a bit of subtle shading—especially on higher-quality paper like Tomoe River. The color itself is rich and lively without being overly bright. It's not a neon or fire-orange—it’s deeper, almost like roasted pumpkin or a glowing ember. It makes a statement, but it’s not aggressive. I’ve used it for journaling, art journaling accents, and even personal notes. It adds warmth and personality without compromising readability. Dry time was quick—around 10 seconds on most papers I tested. No feathering, no bleed-through, and just a hint of ghosting on very thin paper. It’s well-behaved, as you’d expect from Iroshizuku. The bottle is also worth mentioning—beautifully designed, easy to fill from, and it feels like a luxury item in the best way. Pilot really nailed the entire experience, from color to packaging. Final thoughts: If you’re looking for an orange ink that captures the beauty of a fading sunset—something warm, expressive, and surprisingly versatile—Yu-Yake is a must-try. It’s a color that feels good to write with. I always find myself reaching for it when I want to feel a little more present, grounded, and creative.

FAQs about the Pilot Iroshizuku Bottled Ink(50ml)

What is Pilot Iroshizuku ink and why is it popular?

Iroshizuku is Pilot’s premium dye-based fountain pen ink line inspired by Japanese landscapes and seasons. It’s known for smooth flow, rich color, and elegant glass bottles designed for easy filling.

What bottle sizes are available?

Common sizes are 50 mL bottles and 15 mL “mini” bottles (often sold individually or in sets). Availability can vary by color and region.

Is Iroshizuku safe for all fountain pens?

Yes—when used as directed. It’s a well-behaved, dye-based ink suitable for most pens and converters. As with any ink, avoid letting it dry out in the pen; flush periodically to maintain flow.

Is Iroshizuku waterproof or archival?

Most colors are not waterproof or archival; they are designed for smooth everyday writing and vibrant shading. If water resistance is critical, test first or choose a dedicated permanent ink for that purpose.

How fast does it dry and what paper works best?

Dry time depends on nib size, paper coating, and color. On standard office paper with fine/medium nibs, it dries quickly; on coated papers, allow more time. Choose mid-weight, fountain-pen-friendly paper to reduce feathering and bleed-through.

Does Iroshizuku show shading or sheen?

Many colors exhibit attractive shading; a few can sheen on coated paper with wetter nibs. Results vary by color, nib, and paper—experiment to find your favorite combinations.

Can I mix Iroshizuku inks to create custom colors?

Careful mixing of Iroshizuku colors is generally fine, but always test small amounts in a separate vial first. Avoid mixing with pigment, iron-gall, or other chemistry-different inks.

How often should I clean my pen when using Iroshizuku ink?

For daily use, a water flush every few weeks is typically enough. If changing colors, flush until clear. For stubborn residues, use a pen flush recommended by the pen maker—avoid alcohol or hot water.

Can I use Iroshizuku with Pilot converters and cartridges?

Yes. Fill from bottles using a compatible converter (e.g., Pilot CON-40/CON-70 depending on model). Iroshizuku is also available in some cartridge formats, though availability varies by region.

How should I store Iroshizuku ink and how long does it last?

Store bottles upright, capped tightly, away from heat and sunlight. Kept clean and sealed, bottles remain usable for years. If you notice odor, sludge, or mold, discontinue use and replace.

Any precautions when flying or in extreme temperatures with Iroshizuku?

When flying, keep pens either full or empty and store nib-up to reduce burping. Don’t leave bottles in hot cars or freezing conditions; temperature swings can affect performance and cause leaks.

Will Iroshizuku stain pens or converters?

Staining is uncommon but possible with any brightly colored dye ink, especially in demonstrators. Regular cleaning minimizes tinting; a mild pen flush usually clears residual color.

Which Iroshizuku colors are most talked about by writers?

Writers often mention blues and blue-blacks for daily notes, plus distinctive hues across the range (greens, teals, reds). Availability and favorites vary by region and retailer.

Can I use Iroshizuku in dip pens or calligraphy nibs?

Yes—though it’s formulated for fountain pens, many artists dip with it. Expect lighter adhesion on glossy papers versus specialty dip/calligraphy inks. Rinse nibs often to prevent drying on the tip.

What if my pen has hard starts or feels dry with Iroshizuku ink?

Flush the pen to clear old residue, try a different paper, and ensure the cap seals properly. If issues persist, switch nib sizes or have the nib aligned—ink flow also depends on pen tuning.
