Nahvalur (Narwhal) Nautilus Ebonite Reviews
Love this pen! A smooth and wet writer in Bold size, this pen can even handle Herbin inks without a hard start on the shimmer. The colour of the finish is a subtle deep purple swirled with deep brown, and looks very dignified. Could pass as an office pen. I would definitely buy another Nautilus based on the quality of this one.

The Caldera Seas version is perhaps the most beautiful of the Nautilus line! The matching blue furniture and nib is exquisite. . The fine nib writes smoothly and creates a nice Western Fine line. The body is a lovely blue with beige swirls. The pen has a nice weight and feels great in the hand. Unless you have very very small hands, the pen is perfect for most people. PenChalet shipped the pen quickly and their customer service, if needed, is top notch.

I have been waiting to write the review on this for two reasons. First, I ordered a special ink for it and didn't want to fill it with anything else. Secondly, I wanted to spend time with it. For me, spending time isn't days, it's words and pages. Now, having written plenty of pages, I can say, this pen has exceeded my expectations.
I put off getting this pen because it does not post. I paid attention over the last couple of months to how often I post vs not and found I really don't post that often, and when I do I find the pen doesn't feel right in my hand. So, right off, not posting is one "flaw". If that matters to you then this isn't the right pen for you. The second flaw is the clip. I don't find it particularly useful or well built. It feels too tight and feels like it might snap. That could just be an illusion because the connection is so thin, but that is how I feel about it.
That is the bad, not much bad. There are plenty of good things. The ink windows are excellent. They look cool and function. I've grown to really enjoy demonstrator pens even when the demonstration is just a window. IT also holds plenty of ink. Speaking of ink, if you "burp" the pen, meaning get some of the air out, you can fill it even more. You can get two full cycles of the cylinder for twice the ink! I recommend finding a YouTube video on filling it that talks about this so you can see exactly what I mean.
The pen feels good in the hand, a nice size and weight. It also feels really well made. It feels like a higher end pen than the $120 you pay.
How does it write? Smooth, even, clean. The feed is just about perfect. I read a few reviews that said the medium was larger than most mediums but for me it isn't. While some suggest you get a fine if you want a medium, I totally disagree with that. A medium is a medium.
All around I am pleased, more so than I thought I would be. It's not often something exceeds my expectations.

FAQs about the Nahvalur (Narwhal) Nautilus Ebonite
What is the Nahvalur Nautilus and why is it popular?
The Nautilus is a large, piston-filling fountain pen—often made in ebonite—with three “porthole” ink windows and a smooth #6 in-house steel nib. It’s loved for its warm ebonite feel, big ink capacity, and distinctive aesthetics.
What materials and finishes does the Nautilus use?
Ebonite is common (hard rubber with a warm, grippy feel) and select runs use acrylics. Metal trims vary by colorway; the cap sports round “porthole” windows to check ink levels.
Which nib sizes are available and how does it write?
Typical options include EF, F, M, B, and 1.1 stub (availability varies by release). The #6 steel nib is tuned for smooth, moderately wet flow suitable for daily writing and journaling.
What filling system does the Nautilus use—cartridges or piston?
Piston filler. It draws ink directly from a bottle and does not use cartridges. The capacity is generous compared to cartridge/converter pens.
Does the cap post, and how is the balance in hand?
Most writers use the Nautilus unposted; the cap is not designed to post deeply. Unposted, it’s a comfortable full-size pen with a substantial but well-balanced feel.
How do I care for the ebonite and will it smell or discolor?
Ebonite may have a mild sulfur scent at first that fades with use. Keep it out of prolonged direct sun and away from alcohol/solvents. Wipe with a soft slightly damp cloth; dry immediately.
What are the “porthole” windows for, and how big is the ink capacity?
The three round windows show remaining ink at a glance. The piston reservoir holds significantly more than a standard converter—great for long writing sessions.
Which nib works best on office paper versus fountain-pen-friendly paper?
Office paper: EF or F to reduce bleed and show-through. Premium paper: M, B, or 1.1 stub to highlight shading and ink character.
Which inks pair well with the Nautilus, and can I use shimmering inks?
Quality dye-based inks work great. Shimmering or heavily saturated inks are fine with more frequent cleaning to keep the feed clear—especially in finer nibs.
How do I maintain the piston and keep the pen writing well?
Flush with cool water every 3–6 weeks or when changing inks. If the piston feels dry, a tiny amount of 100% silicone grease on the seal (per maker guidance) restores smooth action.
Is the Nautilus good for left-handed writers and quick notes?
Yes. Choose EF/F and a moderately quick-dry ink for copy paper. On coated journals, allow a brief moment for the line to set before touching the page.
Can I swap nibs or buy a replacement later on for the Nautilus?
Most Nautilus models use a #6-size screw-in unit. Replacement sizes are commonly available; confirm collar/thread compatibility with your retailer before purchasing.
Can I fly with the Nautilus without leaks?
As with any fountain pen, fly with the reservoir full or empty, store nib-up, and open slowly after landing. The piston system helps prevent sloshing when properly filled.
Is the Nautilus comfortable for long writing sessions?
Yes—its gently tapered section, large barrel, and warm ebonite surface make it comfortable for extended use. Many writers prefer it unposted for best balance.
What if my Nautilus hard-starts or skips on the page?
Flush to remove residues, ensure the feed is fully primed after filling, and try a different ink or paper. Persistent issues typically resolve with a quick nib alignment/tune by a professional.
What warranty/support is available for the Nautilus?
Nahvalur provides manufacturer coverage against defects (terms vary by region/model). Keep your proof of purchase and contact your retailer or an authorized service center for nib or piston support.
