About the Van Diemans Ink Brand
Van Dieman’s Ink is the kind of ink that turns “I’ll just jot this down” into a full-on obsession—because every bottle is built around Tasmania’s landscapes, flora, and fauna. This small, family-run brand (Peter & Belinda) handcrafts inks in small batches with nature-driven color stories, including options that range from classic everyday shades to shimmer and multi-tonal/dual-tone effects. On Pen Chalet, you’ll find authentic Van Dieman’s Ink from an authorized dealer, plus perks like free U.S. shipping over $75 and discounts on inks.
Van Dieman’s Ink is a Tasmania-based, family-run maker that handcrafts its inks in micro-batches, using a formula built around Pure Tasmanian Mountain Spring Water and 90%+ Australian ingredients—a big reason collectors love the “small-batch” feel and constant stream of fresh, nature-driven color stories.
Popular collections include the Wilderness Series (Tasmania’s wild landscapes translated into dye-based everyday writers), Birds of a Feather (vivid, feather-inspired shades), and the Underwater Collection/Series (ocean-themed inks that lean experimental with unique effects like shimmer and high saturation). They’re also positioned as inks that play nicely with all major fountain pen brands, and the brand/retailer descriptions emphasize non-toxic, vegan, environmentally friendly dyes and ingredients—so you can chase wild color without the guilt.

Beautiful inks! I own two of them. Van Dieman makes a lovely product, especially if you love shimmers. They do very well in a 1.4 stub or Broad nib pen.

Discovered this ink brand only recently and am sorry so much of the selection is already gone. Saturated, complex inks.

Dark, saturated green. If this ever comes out in bottle format, sign me up for at least two bottles.

The Firefly Special Edition is a fun ink to have in your inventory. Starts off light bluish gray, then the gold sparkles start to show as it drys. Love it!

Van Damian has some of the best inks and these are no exception. The colors are lovely and I like the bit of history that the Voyagers series includes with each ink. The inks behave so well in all our pens regardless of brand and nib size. Excellent value for the money.

This is my first Van Dieman ink purchase and I am totally hooked! Such rich, saturated color, which I love. Very smooth ink with some shading. I’ll have to try some more colors now!

Bonfire Night is a glorious, shimmering orange! Very bright, but not neon, with a strong shimmer and a line of gold sheen around areas of pooling. Looks beautiful while writing with a Pilot Parallel or a stub.

Genuinely lovely ink! Got Venus and it's a gorgeous golden brown, lovely shading even when used with a finer nib. Beautiful ink!

I bought Prickly Pear to celebrate Pen Chalet's Anniversary. It truly does sheen beautifully. It's a reddish brown with green sheen. Wonderful ink quality too.

Another fabulous VDI; they do the best shimmers. So far only Diamine's InkVent and Shimmer line come close. They like wide wet writers, but I don't have issues with finer nibs except less consistent shimmer (VDI says as much; standard for any heavy shimmer ink, really) They work wonderfully in artistic projects too, painting, mixed media, etc. Not just for writing anymore!

I have Mercury with the silver shimmer. I love it as an accent shade, although it does just fine all by itself! VDI does blues and purples really well, they're my favorites. They don't clog feeds, dry faster than your usual shimmers, and have unique shades. Can't beat all that for their price. I'd not even heard of them until Pen Chalet, now I can't get them fast enough, lol.

I have all of these and they are some of the most uniquely interesting and beautiful inks I have. Kay Cottee is an especially striking shade & I can't describe her properly, even pics don't do these justice. You have to see them irl. This particular sea blue sparkles with every word in the BENU Broad I use for daily journaling ?? They dry very fast for shimmer and sheen shades. No flow problems even in finer nibs, the shimmer just isn't as bold, being finer lines and all. In Mediums- up they shine like stars. If you're after something different that also won't kill your wallet, try some of the VDI line.

This Night series is one of my favorites of VDI, some lovely shading inks and unique shimmers too, if you're into that :) Parrot Fish is especially unique. They flow well in all my pens from Fine up but do need to be wetter writers for full effect, IMHO. Fun tip with VDI bottles; tilt forward on the slanted part like an inkwell, plus that way the shimmers won't settle/stick to the bottom. I first found VDI inks here and have been hooked on them ever since. Great deals too!

Being new to this brand I got a few of these beauties (Moonlit Lake, Blackened Seas, Shooting Star) to try and they're everything I'd hoped for. I'm test journaling Blackened Seas with what turned out to be a sub-par medium nib and it makes even that pen pleasant to use. I don't find these as dry as some have reported, I guess. They sheen and shade extremely well with the (larger) nib sizes I prefer, which is what I wanted to add some interest. I'd like to try them with brushes for artwork next, I think they're really versatile that way. Happy I found them, tysm!
