Sailor 1911 Standard Fountain Pens Reviews

The Sailor 1911 is the first "serious" pen I have purchased. I have been following the Pen Addict Podcast and their feedback and ideas have pushed me into Fountain Pen Frenzy. OK Frenzy may be pushing it, but I am really enjoying using the pens. I purchased the 1911 and have used a couple of inks in it. Currently I have the iroshizuku shin-ryoke green in the pen, which I really love. Green has always been a favorite color of mine, and this ink works great in the pen. No skipping, nice dry lines so I write in my journals without smearing. The pen fits well in my hand when it is capped (I’m 6’ and some pens feel small but I’m finding fountain pen very comfortable in my hands). I put a convertor into all my pens and enjoy trying different inks from the bottle (messy work at first but I’m getting the hang of it.). I’ll update my findings as I go along but as of now I have the 1911, TWSBI Diamond in Fine, Monteverdi Mountains of the World – MT Kilimanjaro and just got the Lamy AL-Star – Black which I really like.

Absolutely wonderful pen. The fine nib is extremely fine -- even more so than non-Asian EF nibs I have. Perfect for making notes or writing in small spaces. The pen is beautiful and the nib is so smooth.

I received the clear demonstrator with the 14k gold nib today. It is not only beautiful, it is a joy to write with. Very smooth writing and I will soon buy another one. I inked it up with Diamine Marine (a blue green color) and it writes like a dream.

Just got this pen yesterday and I love it. I wanted to try a Music Nib. Although on occasion I practice writing music that's not why I got the pen. Wet nib - which I like and the pen glides over the paper when writing script or characters. My preference is still for fine nibs as that seems to suit my handwriting style. Great service by Pen Chalet - ordered it on the 12/31 late in the day and got it on the third of January despite the Holiday. My only request would be to give delivery options even if I have to pay more - getting the correct mail in my mailbox is quite iffy and I've had bad experiences with the PO.

I purchased the 1911 Standard with a Music Nib, which isn't normally my style, but definitely something that I wanted to try out. The pen itself is very nicely made and is fairly light weight. It's not overly long, and the tapered ends make it seem a little shorter than it actually is. Even though it's not a long pen, it isn't necessary to post in order to maintain a comfortable grip. Certainly the pen lives up to the expectations I had for something made by Sailor.

The nib, because it's somewhat different than many, is definitely something I wanted to highlight. It's much wider than a standard bold nib, and has a wonderful flow of ink. Although intended for writing music, it actually needs to be held in a very upright position in order to do that so that what would normally be the thin sideways line can actually be used as a down stroke. Once I'd discovered this it actually offered a number of different alternatives in writing. I guess, more than anything else, what demonstrates the quality of the nib is that I just want to pick up the pen and start making lines on paper. There aren't many pens and nibs for which that's been the case.

I relatively new to the fountain pen the world after reading many reviews settled on the Sailor 1911. After a weeks worth of use, it has not disappointed and has quickly become my pen of choice. This is a great writing instrument that is striking to look at.
