In the first generation of modern poets from Korea, Lee Yuk-sa and his poetry are much-loved in Korea. Born in 1904 in Andong, Kyungbuk province, the poet died in January 1944 in a Japanese prison located in Beijing. At that time, Korea was occupied by Japan. Yuk-sa became a member of the independence movement and engaged in numerous clandestine activities seeking political change, which led to numerous imprisonments. The poet's name was actually Lee Wonrok, but after his first release from prison in 1927, he started publishing poetry under the pen name Lee Yuk-sa, taken from his prison cell number 264, which read in Korean as Lee Yuk-sa. The Chinese characters of his name mean “the history of the continent.”
