About the Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea
The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea rollerball pen is a spin on one of the Montegrappa's foundational themes and is made in cooperation with Hemingway Ltd., the Ernest Hemingway Estate. The literary-inspired new pen release is a small-batch Limited Edition. Compared to Montegrappa's 2016-2020 Hemingway Collection, the new Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea rollerball pen is a stylistic and thematic departure. Previous Montegrappa Hemingway pen designs focused on Hemingway's life, while The Old Man and the Sea rollerball pen pivots to focus on one of the author's most iconic tales: the story of Santiago and the plucky fisherman's epic struggle to bring a giant marlin to shore. This particular Hemingway tale was written in Cuba, and it was the last volume of fiction published during the author's lifetime. Many consider it Hemingway's greatest literary work, including the author himself. The piece was originally published in LIFE magazine's September 1, 1952 edition. The story earned Hemingway the 1953 Pulitzer Prize for fiction. The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea rollerball pen honors the 70th anniversary of the prestigious award with a limited number of 70 pieces per colorway.
The Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea rollerball pen depicts the main elements of the story with lost wax casting and hand-enameling. The pen's carved cap and blind cap symbolize Santiago's skiff in kotibé mahogany, and the enameled segments represent the sea and sky while creating a backdrop for the pen's centerpiece. The pen was inspired by early editions of the book, and the full-length sculpted pen barrel dramatizes Santiago's struggle with the marlin.
Additional detailing includes a silver fishing rod clip, sculpted trim rings, an engraved grip section, and a high-relief cap top that brandishes Hemingway's game-fishing monogram. On the lower end of the pen's barrel, translucent ocean-blue enamel reveals sculpted detailing beneath, telling the story of the ocean's currents and the sharks who tormented Santiago as he attempted to return to shore.
This limited edition pen release is available in both sterling silver and vermeil (24K yellow gold-plated silver). The Old Man and the Sea Limited Edition rollerball pen is also available as a fountain pen (in both sterling silver and vermeil).
Each of the Montegrappa Ernest Hemingway: The Old Man and the Sea rollerball pens comes with custom packaging designed for display of this uniquely collectible luxury pen with an antiqued wood replica of Santiago's boat designed to be fitted with a die-cut marlin mascot made of solid metal.
