A beautiful, well-balanced fountain pen. Medium Nib (steel) could be a trifle 'broader' but excellent and crisp writing.

This is my first pen from Monteverde and I had heard mixed reviews but, at the price Pen Chalet had it for, I decided that, even if it wasn't a great pen, it wasn't a major investment.

I'm thrilled to say that the pen will become my daily workhorse. The nib floats beautifully and smoothly across the paper (I use Rhodia books so the paper quality helps with the writing experience), holds a substantial amount of ink in its included converter, and the thickness of the body fits nicely in my hands.

One note - if you have large hands, you'll probably want to use this pen with the cap posted or it may be just a bit too short. That does make it just a tiny bit top-heavy but not enough to be a real detriment - especially once there's ink in the pen. Also, holding the pen an additional 1/4" higher seems to resolve the weight of the posted cap.

These are really lovely pens--only a bit below my Duofold on writing smoothness and a much more affordable alternative. The chrome trim begs to be changed for aesthetic purposes, but the functionality is excellent.

I recently purchased the Monteverde Prima Green Swirl with a medium sized nib. I've been testing it for about a week now and wanted to share my thoughts.

I was looking for a mid-range pen with a classic "Duofold" type design. I am staying away from vintage pens due to there being possible mechanical issues, and not wanting to pay the premium prices that a restored Duofold goes for these days. There's the new style Duofold available from Parker, but they run in the $400 price range. In comparing the Parket Duofold to the Monteverde Prima, though, you see a number of similarities in both style and in size:

Duofold Centennial
Body Material: hand-cast acrylic
Nib: solid gold
Size: 137 cm
Weight: 28 gr

Monteverde Prima:
Body Material: hand-made acrylic
Nib: steel
Size: 135 cm
Weight: 27 gr

The Monteverde Prima is 2 cm smaller and 1 gram lighter than the Parker Duofold Centennial. The difference in cost seems to be mostly in materials used for the nib and accents.

The Prima is a very nice looking pen, interesting but not gaudy. The acrylic body is smooth and seems durable, plus I like the slight translucence that gives the swirl design some additional depth. The weight is good for me, and balances well even when posted. Speaking of posting, the cap posts well without issue. The clip is quite tight, but the design allows for it to slip over the clothing and remain in place. It fits perfectly in a dress shirt pocket. The pen comes with a converter and one black and one blue Monteverde ink cartridge. I am currently testing with the Monteverde blue cartridge, which works fine and is a lighter blue color. The pen components fit together well, no gaps between the cap and the clip, the cap screws onto the body easily (1.5 turns), nothing loose or leaking. On to the nib. Some of the fountain pen review sites noted issues with the alignment of the tines or scratchiness, which did make me have some reservations about this pen. However, knowing that the nib is a standard size 6 and friction fit, I tried to keep in mind that the nib could be readily and easily replaced should there be an issue or if I want to switch from a medium to a fine sized nib. The Prima that I received did not have any of the same problems as some reviewers had with the nib. I washed and soaked the pen, and thorough dried it before using, and I had no problems with ink flow or tines out of alignment. The medium nib was smooth, and ink flow was fine with no skipping or slow start up. I did do a minor amount of tuning by smoothing the nib just a bit to match my tastes, but that isn't really necessary.

Pen Chalet shipped the pen quickly and I received it two days later. The packaging was sized to match the pen box, which was wrapped in bubble wrap to prevent it from moving around. The packaging also included a 10% discount card for my next order. I was pleased with the service and packaging that I received from Pen Chalet and will order from them again.

I have no regrets in purchasing the Monteverde Prima. It has been my primary pen for the past week and has started up every time and no skipping. I haven't seen any evidence of wear yet, but only time will tell. I normally use Waterman inks, but I found the supplied Monteverde ink to be nice, as well, and will consider exploring their inks further in the future.

I purchased the stub nib versions of these pens and have found the steel nibs to be very good. I used Iroshizuku, Edelstein, and J.Herbin inks, various colors, with excellent results. The general quality of the pen is above average at the comfortable price point. I've been collecting and using fountain pens for about 45 years and believe this series offers good performance at a nice price.

Have just arrived back in UK and I am now using my Prima Tigers Eye pen with stub nib. As a user and collector of fountain pens I have to say that this has to be the bargain of the Year. It is a better pen than many in my collection that cost much more. Will be back in U.S. In November and I will probably be sending you another order. Top quality pen, top quality pen company. A joy to do business with you. Cheers Ron

The turquoise swirl is even more beautiful in person than in photos. It has lovely depth and is translucent so that you can see pen parts through the body. I love the pearlescent quality. Really awesome for a pen of this price. You can't go wrong with one of these. The pen seems to be a very good quality overall. It writes nice and smoothly with a good ink flow. It is lightweight and sturdy. I only wish there was and EF option for the nib. Now I want one in every swirl color. The ink converter is the screw in variety so it won't accidently come loose. I only wish it had a larger ink capacity. I'm probably just spoiled by my TWSBI Vac 700, but its not fair to compare the two.
