Cross Pens — Brand FAQs
Who is Cross and what products do they make?
Cross is a long-established writing brand known for fountain pens, rollerballs, ballpoints, and mechanical pencils, plus refills and gift sets with classic, professional styling.
What are Cross’s most popular pen lines?
Townsend (flagship), Century II (modern classic), Classic Century (slim icon), ATX (streamlined), and specialty models like Edge or seasonal collections.
Which fountain pen nib sizes are available and what are they made of?
Common sizes include Fine and Medium (availability varies). Nibs are typically stainless steel on many models; some special editions or flagships may offer gold nibs—check the specific listing.
Do Cross fountain pens use standard cartridges or proprietary ones?
Most Cross fountain pens use Cross-proprietary ink cartridges. Many models also accept a matching Cross converter for bottled inks. Always confirm compatibility for your exact pen.
Which refills fit Cross rollerballs and ballpoints?
Ballpoint: Cross ballpoint refills (various colors/points). Rollerball: Cross Selectip rollerball/gel refills (tip styles vary). Use the refill type specified for your model.
What is the writing feel of Cross pens and who are they for?
Cross pens emphasize smooth, controlled lines and professional ergonomics—great for meetings, signatures, daily notes, and gifting. Fountain pens provide a classic feel; rollerballs and ballpoints excel on ordinary office paper.
Do Cross pens post and how is the balance?
Most models can be used posted or unposted. Slim pens like Classic Century suit smaller grips; Century II/Townsend offer a fuller grip and balanced weight for longer sessions.
What materials and finishes does Cross use?
High-polish lacquers, brushed and polished metal finishes, chrome or gold-tone trims, and occasional precious metal or special art finishes on premium and limited releases.
Are Cross pens good for gifts and can they be engraved?
Yes—Cross pens are popular corporate and personal gifts. Many finishes support engraving and ship in a presentation box; check the product page for engraving eligibility.
What warranty do Cross pens have and how do I get service?
Cross offers a manufacturer warranty against defects (terms vary by region/model). Keep your proof of purchase and contact the retailer or Cross service for repairs, nib/exchange options, or parts.
How do I maintain a Cross fountain pen versus a rollerball/ballpoint?
Fountain: Flush nib/section with cool water when changing inks and every few weeks. Rollerball/Ballpoint: Replace refills as needed; keep tips capped/retracted to prevent drying or marks.
Which inks work best in Cross fountain pens?
Most dye-based fountain pen inks perform well. If using highly saturated or shimmering inks, clean more frequently to keep flow consistent—especially in fine nibs.
What refill colors and tip sizes are available for Cross ballpoints and rollerballs?
Multiple colors (black, blue, etc.) and tip sizes are offered. Ballpoint refills come in fine/medium options; Selectip rollerball/gel refills offer different tip styles for line variation.
Any travel tips to prevent leaks or dry-out?
Fountain: Fly with the pen full or empty and store nib-up; open slowly after landing. Rollerball/Ballpoint: Keep retracted and capped, avoid extreme heat/cold.
Which Cross pen should I choose for my first purchase?
Everyday office: Classic Century or Century II ballpoint/rollerball. Signature and gifting: Townsend. Fountain pen starter: Century II or ATX with Fine/Medium nib.

Customer Reviews

Excellent value for a pen! We got this on significant discount ($20 down from $60), and its nib is butter-smooth. Does not come with a converter, unfortunately, and the proprietary fill mechanism means that getting a converter is a bit of a bitch, but it writes well, it's got a lovely juicy flow, and as long as ink variety isn't your hill to die on, it should serve you excellently! We gifted this to our mother, who is more concerned about how the pen writes than what it can write with, and she likes it very much.

I like the color of this ink. But, you need to realize that it's a very dry ink. It makes Pelikan 4001 look wet. It works great in Cross pens, which have generous ink channels in their feeds. With other makes of pens, or fine / EF nibs, you may find the ink flow insufficient. I use this in my Indian eyedroppers with flex nibs, which sometimes have too much flow. Also, in my Cross pens, where the combination is very well behaved.

This pen is absolutely gorgeous! It feels very sturdy and well made. The color and metal detail on the body are really beautiful. It is a narrower pen, but fits nicely in my hand. I love the way it writes and it is easy to replace the refills.

I purchased the white/rose gold model with a fine nib and am more than satisfied with it--especially at the sale price of $50. Though a slim, metal pen, it suits my hand (medium large golf glove) well in terms of its length and heft. I can use it comfortably posted or not. The nib is especially wet and therefore smooth for a fine. The overall appearance of the pen is strikingly handsome. In short, it strikes me as an extraordinary value--a pen I will use often.

My first pen that costs more than $20 and I love it. It’s got me thinking about getting something made of better materials ie more expensive pens. If I can hold on to it for a year. The pen writes smooth and is easy to use with the converter. It makes a clank noise with the converter that scares me into thinking it’s come loose but that’s not the case. I think the barrel just taps the pen inside when writing.

Cross really hit it out of the park when they came out with the ATX line. They’re well crafted pens at the entry level price. The brushed blue pen is even more beautiful in person- it’s stunning. I bought one as a gift for my husband, and I liked it so much I had to get one for myself. If you want an excellent quality fountain pen at a lower price point, this is the pen to get. Of course kudos to Pen Chalet for shipping quickly and being their normal awesome selves.

so many positives with this pen. Where to start? First, thanks to Pen Chalet for getting it to me so fast. They are so great to work with. The picture doesn't do this pen justice. It is bright, well balanced and writes like butter. I bought it on sale and, truthfully, would buy it if it wasn't on sale. Craftmanship is wonderful, seems to write well with every ink I have tries, and lays just right in my hand. I have to re-ink it in permanent ink because I am using it all the time. Pen Chalet is the best.
