About the Caran dAche Brand
Caran d’Ache originated as a simple pencil maker located in Geneva, Switzerland in 1915 to over 100 years later emerging as one of the worlds recognized leaders in premier manufacturing and the only manufacturer of fine writing instruments to be located in Switzerland.Although the Swiss are known for their technical knowledge and excellent craftsmanship and quality in its watch making industry, Caran d’Ache has extended such craftsmanship and quality to the fine writing manufacturing as well.
Arnold Schweitzer merged the original writing instrument company with the Ecridor Pencil Factory when he purchased it in 1924. Mr. Schweitzer decided to name his new company after the nickname of a French Political cartoonist, whose name originated from karandash, which is the Russian word for pencil, thus Caran d’Ache was officially formed.
Caran d’Ache continues to manufacture its products in its Geneva Switzerland workshops today.
Pen Chalet is a proud Authorized Dealer of Caran d’Ache pens, pencils and inks.
Caran d’Ache — Brand FAQs
Who is Caran d’Ache and what are they known for?
Caran d’Ache is a Swiss maker of premium writing instruments and art materials, recognized for meticulous craftsmanship, distinctive guilloché patterns, rich lacquers, and smooth writing performance across fountain, rollerball, ballpoint, and mechanical pencil lines.
What are Caran d’Ache’s signature pen collections?
849 (iconic everyday ballpoint), Ecridor (hexagonal metal, engraved motifs), Léman (lux lacquers), and limited high-art pieces. Many lines are offered as fountain, rollerball, and ballpoint variants.
Which fountain pen nib sizes are available and what are they made of?
Most Caran d’Ache fountain pens use polished steel or gold nibs (model-dependent) in EF, F, M, and B. The writing feel is smooth and well-controlled for daily notes or signature work.
Do Caran d’Ache fountain pens use standard cartridges and converters?
Most models accept international cartridges and an international-style converter for bottled ink. Always check your specific model’s listing to confirm what’s included.
Which refill fits the 849 and other Caran d’Ache ballpoints?
Caran d’Ache ballpoints typically use the proprietary Goliath giant refill, known for long life and clean, consistent lines. Choose your preferred color and tip size per the product page.
What refills do Caran d’Ache rollerball pens use?
Caran d’Ache rollerballs use brand-specified rollerball refills matched to the pen’s section. Tip sizes and colors vary; check your model for the correct refill type.
What materials and finishes are common in Caran d’Ache pens?
Expect engraved metal (guilloché) bodies, precious resins, deep lacquers, and plated trims. The brand emphasizes precise machining, durable clips, and Swiss-made fit and finish.
Do Caran d’Ache pens post and how is the balance?
Most fountain and rollerball models can be used posted or unposted; the hexagonal forms (e.g., Ecridor) offer secure grip and no-roll convenience. Balance varies by line—try both posted and unposted to suit your hand.
Are Caran d’Ache pens suitable for everyday carry?
Yes. The 849 ballpoint is a classic EDC choice for durability and reliability, while Ecridor and Léman offer upscale materials for professional settings without sacrificing daily usability.
How do I maintain Caran d’Ache pens?
Fountain: Flush nib and feed with cool water when changing inks or every few weeks. Roller/ballpoint: Replace refills as needed and keep tips capped/retracted to prevent marks. Avoid hot water or alcohol on pen parts.
Which inks work best in Caran d’Ache fountain pens?
Most dye-based fountain pen inks perform well. If you use highly saturated or shimmering inks, clean more frequently to maintain consistent flow, especially in finer nibs.
Are Caran d’Ache pens good for gifting and can they be engraved?
Yes. Many models ship in presentation boxes and some finishes support engraving. Verify engraving eligibility and lead times on the specific product page.
What warranty do Caran d’Ache pens include and how do I get service?
Caran d’Ache offers a manufacturer warranty against defects (terms vary by model/region). Keep proof of purchase and contact the retailer or an authorized service center for repairs and parts.
Which Caran d’Ache pen should I choose as my first?
Everyday office: 849 ballpoint. Elegant daily writer: Ecridor (rollerball or fountain). Luxury feel: Léman fountain pen with your preferred nib (F or M for most paper).
Any travel tips to prevent leaks or dry-out?
Fountain: Fly with the pen full or empty and store nib-up; open slowly after landing. Roller/ballpoint: Keep retracted/capped and avoid extreme heat or cold.

Customer Reviews

I own a number of Caran d'Ache pens and have the matching ballpoint, so I ordered the pencil. It looks great, works great, and functions well, especially for the price point.

Love how the ink flows nicely through the ink ball. It does not smear or "gunk up" like some refills. Would buy again when needed.

This pen is a good weight and definitely made well. It is smaller than a normal ballpoint pen so I have to remember that I have it in my pen bag. It does write very well and feels good when I write with it.

I love these ballpoint pens. Smooth writing, the pen glides on any type of paper. I love the hexagonal shape, that reminds me of the wooden pencil. They come in a wide variety of colors that can become collectable really quick. I highly recommend these pens.

Great ink, I appreciate being able to sample the inks, as going through an entire large bottle will never happen (though that won't stop me from buying large ink bottles!). Now if only we could send back these plastic sample bottles to get another refil to save on plastic waste...

An excellent fountain pen with the look and feel of high quality and precision. The pen is well-balanced and easy to write with. The nib is steel but is smooth, with a bit of flex which creates a pleasing amount of line variation (on the medium nib, at least). It is neither "wet" nor "dry" but somewhere in between. A slight drawback is that it seems not to accept non-Caran d'Ache cartridges, so if one wants to use other brands of ink, one has to use the converter reservoir.

I bought the fluorescent orange color. The pen is BRIGHT! I mean it is true to the fluorescent orange color! The pen is very lightweight. I put Diplomat Orange using a converter. It writes well, M nib. The only complaint I have at this time is that where the screw in neck meets the body, there is a lip which for me is a tad uncomfortable, but this does not affect the craftsmanship at all. This is why I chose 4 under the Product Style. I will use it and I think after use that will not be an issue.

This pen is a smooth writer in extra fine.
I set the cap aside when I write, because as others have observed, the cap is wobbly.
I have a very small hand, and this pen fits well, and it’s neither too light nor too heavy.
The fluorescent pink is uniquely enticing; I wish I could buy all the colors.

I've used Fixpencils for years and have always loved them. I'm a Nespresso user too so I thought what could be better. It feels good in the hand and is great for sketching.
I bought one as a gift for an associate.

Expensive, but worth it. Beautiful ink that performs well. Dries quickly, does not smear. Only downside is that it is not at all water resistant, but this is true of most all inks.

Great pens. They by far are the most smooth single use ballpoint pens I have ever used (they write like the Goliath refills). The wood chip adds visual appeal and I like the back story. Pen barrel is smooth.
