About No. 4 Nasu (Purple / Eggplant) Platinum Preppy Wa Maki-e 2nd Edition
The Platinum Preppy Wa Maki-e 2nd Edition fountain pens are a follow up to the popular original release in 2023. The 2nd edition features a similar overall design with a pen body decorated in one of six elegant, traditional Japanese patterns created using the modern Maki-e technique*. Choose your favorite auspicious pattern based on the color, the design or the meaning associated with the pattern.
Platinum Preppy Wa Maki-e fountain pens use the Platinum Preppy pen model, popular since its release in 2007. The extremely affordable fountain pen offers an authentic writing experience with stainless steel nib featuring a special alloy point that is resistant to wear. In fact, the Platinum Preppy pens in general offer the best quality nib in their price range. The Preppy is also equipped with Platinum's innovative “Slip & Seal mechanism” that prevents your pen's ink from drying out even after a year with the cap closed securely.
The Platinum Preppy Wa Maki-e 2nd Edition fountain pens are available in 6 colors/patterns:
1. Hyotan (Gourd / Red): An auspicious Sennari gourd pattern (accompanied by vines and leaves) that brings prosperity to descendants. The Sennari gourd, which bears many fruits, is famous as the Toyotomi Hideyashi's horse seal.
2. Tachibana (Citrus / Green): A wild mandarin orange pattern. The only wild mandarin in Japan, in Kokjiki (records of ancient Japan), the Tachibana is described as a plant of Tokoyo no Kuni (the utopia of mortality). Another auspicious motif, the Tachibana is considered a symbol of eternal prosperity and longevity.
3. Koi no Taki-Nobori (Carp Climbing Up a Waterfall / Blue): The auspicious Carp pattern symbolizes success in life. Carp, known as the chief river fish, is known for strong vitality and is described in ancient Chinese storytelling as "...climbing a rushing waterfall, ascending to the sky, and becoming a dragon."
4. Nasu (Eggplant / Purple): A homophone meaning "things will go well" and success, people love the Nasu pattern and believe it brings good luck. Familiar to the Japanese people, the Ichi-Fuji, Ni-Taka, and San-Nasubi (Mt. Fuji, hawk, and eggplants) are believed to bring good luck if seen in the first dream of the new year.
5. Yanagi ni Koumori (Bats and Willow / Black): A symbol of good fortune and longevity, the kanji for bat has the same sound as "turning into good fortune," so it is considered an auspicious pattern. During the Heian period, it was specifically seen as a symbol of happiness.
6. Asagao (Morning Glory / Gray): During the Heian period, morning glories were introduced for medicinal purposes, and their cultivation became more popular during the Edo period, during which they became a popular subject in ukiyo-e. Because the seeds are expensive, it is a pattern of prosperity and wealth. It also carries the meaning of "strong bond" based on the strength of its vine.
*Unlike conventional Maki-e, Modern Maki-e is applied with silk screen printing instead of urushi lacquer on the underlayer, which is then sprinkled with colored powders such as gold and silver and hand-finished one by one by Maki-e artisans. It gives more thickness compared to normal printing, while the reflections and shades of the powders create a three-dimensional feel.

Platinum Preppy Wa Maki-e 2nd Edition Reviews
Grabbed the blue carp waterfalls the minute I saw it and glad I did. So pretty with the silver accents. Eyedroppered with Van Dieman's Twilight Zone from their Sea collection and it's perfect. You can't go wrong with a Preppy :)
