About the Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju
The Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju rollerball pen is a handcrafted, luxury fine writing instrument. The limited edition was created in collaboration with Japanese designer Tomita Kazuhiko. The design is best described as ambitious and avant-garde, and the original inspiration came from Jean Cocteau's 1946 film La Belle et la Bête, a rendition of Beauty and the Beast.
Two Japanese woodblock printing techniques, Kabuki and Kintsugi, are seen working together in this piece to fearlessly interpret the timeless tale of heroism, beauty, and love. The finial and the display base design both represent the beast or the Shishi. The golden enamel on the pen body emulates the Japanese golden repair technique (Kintsugi). The golden key seen in Cocteau’s film is recreated at the top of the pen's barrel and it even corresponds to a lock worked into the pen's cap band design. Both elements are cast in vermeil, which serves as another veiled reference to forbidden love.
Each Montegrappa Bijo-To-Yaju fountain pen is limited to 222 pieces and is packaged in a lacquered wooden case (also designed by Kazuhiko). The limited edition comes in a unique box that emulates the tiered roofs of Japanese medieval castles and is a stunning finishing touch to an already luxurious Montegrappa release.
