The Montegrappa Avanguardia Series: Nicolaus Copernicus Watch & rollerball pen set celebrates the first European scientist to propose that Earth and other planets actually revolve around the sun. The 550th anniversary release encompasses 550 fountain pens and rollerballs, including a 55-piece numbered Reserve Edition comprising a fountain pen and a companion wristwatch.
During his lifetime, Nicolaus Copernicus's (1473-1543) work was not widely accepted. In fact, it wasn't widely accepted until 200 years later, and even then, his ideas were still banned by the Catholic church until 1835.
The Montegrappa Avanguardia Series: Nicolaus Copernicus rollerball pen is crafted of sterling silver (with the black and white celluloid grip section as the only exception). Artisans used the lost wax casting technique to create a beautiful custom ruzzolino clip depicting a mathematician’s compass and a working reproduction of his celestial globe on the cap top. Both of the featured elements replicate objects included on Copernicus’ official monument in front of Warsaw Polish Academy of Sciences.
Additional design details are created with low-relief engraving, with vermeil depicting the sun on the pen's lower barrel at the center of the eight orbiting planets hand-detailed in opalescent enamel finishes spaced along the length of the pen barrel and cap. Traditional Slavic cross-stitch patterns are showcased on the pen's blind cap and cap band, and Copernicus's signature is included on the pen's finial. The Montegrappa Avanguardia Series: Nicolaus Copernicus rollerball pen uses a piston filling system and is fitted with a #6 18kt gold nib (available in varying nib sizes). The beautiful fountain pen nib is customized with Copernicus's likeness and the earth orbiting the sun.
Each Montegrappa Avanguardia Series: Nicolaus Copernicus rollerball pen is packaged in a custom walnut pen display case with an acrylic lid offering a view of the stunning pen and matching timepiece.
Fountain pen numbers 1-55 are featured with the exclusive 42mm stainless-steel/titanium watch. The Avanguardia Series: Nicolaus Copernicus Watch features an Italian-made automatic OISA 1937 movement with a power reserve of up to 60 hours. Its custom dial features a solar system schematic and Copernicus’s signature surrounded by a deflector marked with the zodiac signs. Traditional engravings on the case replicate those included in the fountain pen design.
