The new limited modern Maki-e model with a quintessential Japanese feel will be released from the Japan-themed “preppy wa” fountain pen series that has been enjoying popularity since its launch in 2021. Featuring a total of six patterns, the new models convey the elegance and grace of Japanese tradition incorporated into a modern design using a distinctive modern Maki-e* technique.
Each pattern symbolizes a special auspicious sign so that you can choose your own favorite based on the design or meaning. The nib made of highly-polished stainless steel with a mixed metal point provides excellent abrasion resistance, making it the best quality fountain pen series for this price range.
It also comes equipped with the Slip & Seal Mechanism, which prevents the ink from drying out inside the pen even after a year without usage, providing a stress-free, smooth writing experience at any time. Preppy wa models are particularly appreciated by international customers while the auspicious patterns make them ideal for a casual gift.
Unlike conventional Maki-e, it is applied with silk screen printing instead of urushi lacquer on the underlayer, which is then sprinkled with colored powders such as gold and silver and hand-finished one by one by Maki-e artisans. It gives more thickness compared to normal printing, while the reflections and shades of the powders create a three-dimensional feel.

I ordered the Fukura Suzume because I liked the detailing, and I like the significance of it. (There's a bit of a pun to the whole thing, leading to the puffy sparrow becoming a symbol of fortune and joy.) I was surprised by the fact that the golden sparrows are finished in very fine glitter. I really like it, but I'm just worried that frequent use will rub it away, which discourages me from wanting to use it more.
The quality is what you'd expect from resin/plastic body, and it's both lightweight and usable. I will concede that it feels almost terrifyingly lightweight, though -- I might be making it up, but it feels lighter than the normal Preppy line and therefore strikes me as more liable to breaking or cracking.
Otherwise, I have no hesitations with it, really. The nib works nicely as one would expect from a Platinum Preppy, and the color of the body is beautiful. (I also have a golden Platinum converter in it, so the body looks particularly nice.) It's an extremely reasonable price for something that's really pretty, and I'll just have to handle it with particular care.

I have been pleased to purchase each of the pens in every one of the three series. All of them have been excellent in every regard. They have quality nibs, are well-made and aesthetically pleasing. It is my hope that Platinum will continue to produce these models yearly and connect the design on each of the them with some aspect of Japanese culture.
