Coming upon this pen on sale at such a great price at the Chalet (my favorite purveyor of fine pens, hands down) was an instance of what a friend of mine used to tell me often, "timing is everything in this world, Al." And so it was for the Pilot 845 fountain pen, which now sits atop my messy desk; for sure, there's no missing it as its gleaming Urushi can be seen from across the room. As anyone who is seriously interested in this pen is aware of, the reviews of it (video and otherwise) on the internet are, like nearly every fountain pen produced from about 1990 onwards, cancerous and multiplying as I write this. I feel the only meritorious contribution I can add to the tremendous body of knowledge about this pen is my own subjective experience, which is little more than worthless, but an extremely short chatataqua seems the least I can do for Ron and the crew at the Chalet who granted me such a generous discount and made what would have been an otherwise unobtainable pen within my grasp. I was lucky enough to get the coveted Vermillion finish with a medium nib. I had been thinking about this pen for a long while but I was hung up between this model, the Custom Urushi, and the Namiki Yukari Royale. There was so much out there on all three of the pens mentioned that it became a bit overwhelming. A long standing customer of the Chalet, I check what's new and, more importantly, what is not sold out about every weekend (uh-hum); nine times out of ten this pen would either be sold out or simply not available in the color and nib size that I wanted. I didn't put in a special order or request, but it happened a few weeks ago when I was browsing and noticed that at long last the Vermillion in medium was indeed available. The pen arrived swiftly and with no issues, was well packed. everything was in order. When I opened the rather restrained faux leather box, I will admit the pen did not have me doing backflips. Despite its orange/red color and large size, this is a restrained pen aesthetically. The ornamentation is minimal but what ornamentation is there is done correctly - no, perfectly. Under a 10x loupe it's obvious that someone spent a lot of time and put a great deal of care into the production of this pen. From the filled-in letters on the cap band to the threading on the cap and barrel, it all just feels precise and it's obvious when holding this pen that you have in your hands a writing instrument of the highest order. My Pilot hoard is now at eleven fountain pens, ranging from a ruby red Stargazer to my new 845. All the nibs on my pens have been as close to perfect as I could ask for and the #15 two-tone nib on the 845 is no exception. It lays down a wonderfully wet and silky smooth fine/medium line that has performed flawlessly out of the box. Did this drown my desire for a Yukari Royale? Most certainly not. I am, however, glad that I chose this pen over the slightly larger Custom Urushi. I think this pen can stand on its own merits against nearly anything on the market today and while its not a Namiki Yukari Royale, it's certainly a nice primer for one and will occupy an august space in my hoard until I find a way to obtain that pen. Until that happy day arrives, I will be enjoying my Custom 845, unposted, with whatever the Iroshizuku of the week happens to be. Aut Caesar, aut nihil

You cannot go wrong with a Pilot Custom 823 or 845. The 845 is usually not available in the U.S. so having it available in the impossible to find and gorgeous Red Vermillion color is an incredible opportunity. From a writing point of view both pens are very similar. The 823 is a vacuum filler where the 845 uses cartridge. Both nibs are large #15 but the 845 is bicolor. The big difference is the 823 is only available in demonstrator color while the 845 is available in black and red Urushi finish similar to the big brother Custom Urushi. Clearly a luxury pen but if you can afford it don't miss the opportunity.
