Pelikan’s Ink of the Year series is a beloved luxury line of Edelstein inks. Edelstein Apatite ink is the 11th \u201cink of the year\u201d color produced by Pelikan and it’s a fantastic addition to the collection! Most ink of the year colors are only available for a limited time. However, a few of the inks originally released as Ink of the Year inks (such as Garnet ink) have been re-introduced as Edelstine production ink colors at a later date. Edelstein, which means “stone,” is Pelikan’s higher end ink brand. Pelikan Edelstein inks are the go to inks for many fountain pen enthusiasts. Edelstein inks offer good lubrication, medium to high saturation, and high performance with amazing, vibrant colors. Every year we look forward to the next Pelikan ink of the year color.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
All About This Week\u2019s Feature: Pelikan Edelstein Apatite Ink<\/h2>\n\n\n\n
Apatite, in nature, is typically green, but could also be yellow, blue, reddish-brown or purple. Pelikan’s Edelstein Apatite ink is a very vibrant turquois-blue color with a tint of green that goes down with medium to high saturation. Apatite ink goes down dark on paper with consistent color flow. The ink’s color is unique and interesting showing some fun ink characteristics, and no one can overlook the advantage of getting their hands on the Pelikan Edelstein ink bottle. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Remember, this week’s ink, Pelikan Edelstein Apatite, is not slated to be part of Pelikan’s regular Edelstein ink line, so once they’re gone, they’ll be discontinued. <\/p>\n\n\n\n For this Pelikan Edelstein Apatite ink<\/a> review, we put the new ink to the test to see how it performed with some of our standard ink testing materials and paper products. Read on for all the details (which we think you\u2019re not going to want to miss).<\/p>\n\n\n\n As usual, we used a French-made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on Rhodia<\/a> bloc pad paper. As always, we want to remind you that different papers or different nib sizes may produce different results!<\/p>\n\n\n\n For their Edelstein inks (including their Edelstein ink of the year releases), Pelikan uses a very distinctive and much-loved inkwell bottle that has become known as the Edelstein inkwell bottle. The bottle is a heavy-weighted 50ml glass bottle with superior presentation. We’d go so far as to say it’s one of the best in the industry. The lid is large and faceted (allowing for easy opening and plenty of access for pen filling). The outer packaging is very professional and protects the Edelstein ink bottle well. Each bottle has the ink’s name printed on the label, and the actual ink color is represented on the box’s exterior clearly alongside the text identifying the ink brand, collection, and color name. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Pelikan Edelstein Apatite ink is in the 50ml bottle, and we\u2019d describe it as a mid to high-range priced ink. Look for the best prices at PenChalet.com.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We applied our standard one dip test to see how far Pelikan Apatite ink would write on paper (dipping the dip pen in ink only on time). Apatite ink easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples (one dip per writing sample, S, X, and scribble lines).<\/p>\n\n\n\n During our review, Pelikan Apatite ink showed a dry time of approximately 5 seconds with medium to high saturation. We’d suggest Apatite ink as a good choice for everyday use, and think it would be suitable for most projects from special notes to journaling, and letter writing, and more.<\/p>\n\n\n\n We saw zero bleeding during normal use. However, we did see some slight bleeding during the Cotton Swab Test (at the wettest points).<\/p>\n\n\n\n We saw no feathering during normal use. We did see some slight noticeable feathering during the water test and during the heaviest saturation with the cotton swab test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n Pelikan Apatite ink is not waterproof, but as usual, we put it to a water test anyway. (Don’t question us, you know you like to see what WOULD happen if your ink was exposed to water even if no one expects it to exhibit waterproof ink qualities). For the water test, we let our ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before we run a wet cotton swab over the sample to observe the effect. Here\u2019s what we saw when we subjected Apatite to our standard water test:<\/p>\n\n\n\n The ink held up very well to the water test – not too shabby for a non-waterproof fountain pen ink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The Pelikan Edelstein Apatite ink showed very nice shading possibilities with a lighter almost turquoise color to a darker shade of blue-green. <\/p>\n\n\n\n The 2022 Ink of the Year, Pelikan’s Edelstein Apatite ink is a mid to high-priced ink with a very beautiful blue-green color and a dry time of about 5 seconds. The ink is brought to us by a very well regarded German pen and ink company with fantastic packaging and one of the best ink bottles in the industry (50ml). A high performance ink safe for use with fountain pens, Pelikan Apatite ink was well worth the wait and well-deserving of the Ink of the Year designation!
