For our review of Private Reserve Copper Burst fountain pen ink, we used a French made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen on Rhodia dot pad paper<\/a> (also French made). The dip pen has a tip that is comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Private Reserve Copper Burst ink comes in a simple large capacity 60 ml. round bottle, with a really big lid. The packaging is simple and effective including a clear description of the ink’s color. The large lid has ridges along the side to make it easier to get a grip and open the ink without any trouble. However, with any ink bottle featuring a large opening like this, it’s important to make sure the lid catches the threads on the bottle when closing your ink \u2013 the larger the ink bottle opening, the larger the mess if the cap isn\u2019t put back on correctly when you’re finished using the ink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Did This Week\u2019s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We applied a one dip test to see how far one dip could write on paper (dipping the pen into the ink only one time). Private Reserve Copper Burst ink is a medium to high saturation ink, and it easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples (one dip per writing sample: \u201cS\u201d \u201cX\u201d and scribble lines).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Fast Does the Private Reserve Copper Burst Ink Dry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During our review, Copper Burst ink showed a dry time of approximately 7-8 seconds with medium to high saturation; which is quick enough to be considered a good choice for an everyday ink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Copper Burst Ink Bleed Through?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We saw no bleeding during normal use, and no bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test either. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was There Any Feathering While Using Private Reserve Copper Burst Ink?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We saw no feathering during normal use, and only some slight feathering during the water test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Private Reserve Copper Burst ink is not waterproof, but we put it through a water test anyway to see how well it performed. We got significant color smearing (expected with this dye-based fountain pen ink), but the lines were still clearly legible. Although we did see some slight feathering during the water test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About Shading & Sheening Traits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Private Reserve Copper Burst ink has some really nice shading traits, if you have a nib that will allow ink flow variation like a stub or italic nib. We saw shades from dark burnt red color to a lighter copper-red color (and a few shades in between). They were all a fantastic and unique red color. We also saw some dark sheen at the wettest points of the cotton swab test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In conclusion, this week\u2019s featured fountain pen ink is a popular ink recently reintroduced to the pen world (and added to the Pen Chalet inventory). The Private Reserve inks are made in the European Union and they’re very economically priced. They come in clear, neat packaging with simple color labeling and a large, 60 ml. ink bottle. Private Reserve Copper Burst ink is a unique, dark copper-red color. We love that the large, easy to open lid on the Private Reserve ink bottles provides easy access, but be warned this type of large mouth lid may collect ink at the top. Open the lid slowly and pay attention to the possibility that the ink might drop on the threading a bit when you open the ink or you could be in for an epic ink mess. Private Reserve inks are high performance inks, easy to clean and use and we found this week\u2019s Tropical Blue ink to be a great choice for an everyday ink color. It’s a particularly good choice since it comes in a big bottle with a large, easy access opening, and offers a quick dry time.
