Last week’s featured Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster Saguaro Green ink<\/a> was one of three exclusive inks recently released at Pen Chalet. Many of you were hoping to see more of these lovely Australian-made, Arizona inspired fountain pen inks. And we always aim to please. All About the Ink Maker: Robert Oster<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We enjoy a great partnership with Robert Oster. His Australian company, Robert Oster Inks, creates a wide array of fountain pen inks known for their dependability, shading traits, and vivid colors. We currently carry close to 150 of Robert Oster’s popular inks. We recently collaborated with Robert Oster to create three Pen Chalet Exclusive ink colors. While Robert Oster inks are generally reflections of the Australian landscape and scenery, the Robert Oster Pen Chalet collaboration inks reflect the beautiful and unique landscape right here in Arizona. In 2020, we released the 1st of these Australian-made, Arizona inspired inks, Antelope Canyon, and in January 2021, we released three more:<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This Week\u2019s Featured Ink: Robert Oster Sedona Red Ink<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Robert Oster Sedona Red ink is a beautiful dark majestic shade of dark red, which is reminiscent of the beauty and majesty of the red rocks surrounding Sedona, Arizona (a world-famous city in Pen Chalet’s home state). If you’ve never had the opportunity to see the red rocks of Sedona, Arizona, look them up online and then plan a trip to see them in person. The beauty of these red rock formations is a natural phenomenon, bringing people from all over the world to the would-be sleepy little town of Sedona.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We used a French-made J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip comparable to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) and Rhodia dot pad paper<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Let’s Talk About the Robert Oster Ink Bottle: <\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Robert Oster Sedona Red ink comes in their standard PET environmentally friendly plastic 50 ml. bottle with a leak-proof cap. Each bottle is identical, with a simple white label printed with a representation of the color (Sedona Red). Additional text on the ink swatch label attached to the bottle cap indicates this is a PenChalet.com Exclusive. Robert Oster uses no additional packaging, which keeps the cost down for everyone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Much Does Robert Oster Fountain Pen Ink Cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

How Did This Week\u2019s Ink Fair in the 1-Dip Test?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We conducted a 1-dip test with Robert Oster Sedona Red ink using a J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen and Rhodia dot pad paper. (For the 1-Dip Test, we dip the pen in ink once for each of three different writing samples. The three writing samples include: \u201cS,\u201d \u201cX,\u201d and scribble lines. The test looks for how well the ink performs on paper by showing if the pen runs out of ink before completing a full line). Sedona Red ink very easily wrote across the paper on all three writing samples with lots of ink to spare. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Fast Does the Sedona Red Ink Dry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Robert Oster\u2019s Sedona Red fountain pen ink showed a dry time of approximately 13-14 seconds with medium saturation; which is a little longer than we like to see for an everyday fountain pen ink. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Robert Oster Sedona Red Ink Bleed Through?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We saw no bleeding during normal use on Rhodia dot pad paper. And we saw no additional bleeding during the cotton swab test. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was There Any Feathering While Using Sedona Red Ink?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We saw no feathering during normal use on Rhodia dot pad paper. We did see some slight feathering during the water test, but since this isn\u2019t a waterproof ink, that\u2019s expected. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does the Ink Stand Up to Water?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

For the water test, we let an ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before running a wet cotton swab over the sample. This week’s ink isn\u2019t waterproof, and we did see dark color smearing. However, the lines were still legible though they did show some very slight distortion and line fading. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What About Shading & Sheening Traits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Robert Oster Sedona Red is a darker ink, so there’s not as much shading possibilities, but you will see some with the right nib and penmanship. We saw some slight green sheening at the wettest points. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Final Conclusion on this Week\u2019s Featured Robert Oster Ink:<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sedona Red is a reasonably priced ink for the 50 ml bottle size. The nice, dark red color is a deep red (not a burgundy) and shows some possible sheening traits. Made by prolific and well known Australian ink maker Robert Oster, the inks arrive in simple but effective environmentally friendly packaging. The ink has a bit of a longer dry time for an every day ink (approximately 13-14 seconds). Sedona Red ink joins Antelope Canyon, Saguaro Green, and Monsoon Sky as one of the Pen Chalet Exclusive Robert Oster fountain pen inks inspired by our home state of Arizona.
