This week&#8217;s Royal Purple is something of a dark and beautiful cousin to the light and bright Sky Blue.<\/p>\n<h2>All About the Ink Maker: TWSBI<\/h2>\n<p>TWSBI already had a reputation for creating exceptional, high quality, piston-filled fountain pens at an affordable price when they recently made a move to expand their offerings to quality fountain pen inks. While TWSBI is a Taiwanese company, they manufacture their inks in China. They&#8217;ve only recently started creating fountain pen inks, but we find that they approached ink manufacturing with the same precision they use in their pen manufacturing business. Their products, pens and fountain pens alike stand out from the crowd because they are so precise in every step of the design and manufacturing process.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/twsbi\/\">TWSBI<\/a> currently has two ink series or lines of inks: the TWSBI regular ink series and the TWSBI 1791 ink series. The TWSBI regular ink series includes four basic colors, all in a large capacity 70 ml. bottle: TWSBI Regular Black, Twsbi Regular Blue-Black, TWSBI Regular Red, and Twsbi Regular Sapphire Blue.<\/p>\n<p>This week&#8217;s featured ink, Royal Purple, is one of six inks included in TWSBI &#8216;s second ink series: TWSBI 1791 ink series.<\/p>\n<h2>All About the Ink Series: TWSBI 1791 Ink Series<\/h2>\n<p>This TWSBI 1791 ink series pulls inspiration from one of China&#8217;s four great classical novels, The Dreams of the Red Chamber, written in, you guessed it, the year 1791. The six inks in the series are colors pulled directly from descriptions and buildings in this Chinese classic. TWSBI 1791 ink series includes six non-basic colors, all in a smaller, 18 ml. bottle:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>TWSBI 1791 Emerald Green<\/li>\n<li>TWSBI 1791 Orange<\/li>\n<li>TWSBI 1791 Pink<\/li>\n<li>TWSBI 1791 Prairie Green<\/li>\n<li>TWSBI 1791 Sky Blue<\/li>\n<li>TWSBI 1791 Royal Purple<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Remember how we mentioned the TWSBI products stand out from the crowd because they are so precise in every step of the design and manufacturing process? You can see that precision clearly reflected here in their choice of bottle for their two different ink lines. The TWSBI regular ink series includes &#8220;basic&#8221; colors. Basic colors are commonly used, everyday inks in colors that tend to suit a wide variety of projects. Before you add TWSBI Royal Purple fountain pen ink to your collection, read on to see how this week&#8217;s fountain pen ink fared during the tests we use for each week&#8217;s ink review (including the new &#8220;1 Dip Test&#8221; we added to the review process a few weeks ago). In the 1 Dip Test, we test the ink to see if one dip in the fountain pen ink is enough to create a full line of writing across the entire page without re-dipping the pen.<br \/>\nRead the full review of this week&#8217;s featured TWSBI ink below!<\/p>\n<h2>Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):<\/h2>\n<p>Today&#8217;s review isn&#8217;t our first <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/tag\/review\/\">fountain pen ink review<\/a>. Shocker, right? We&#8217;ve completed dozens, maybe hundreds, of ink reviews at this point, and we&#8217;ve learned a few things. One of the most important lessons to remember when considering ink reviews is that when you&#8217;re measuring or gauging fountain pen ink performance, the materials you&#8217;re using while conducting the ink review tests make a huge difference. So, never fear, we list the products we use each week during the ink review right here.<\/p>\n<p>While reviewing TWSBI Royal Purple fountain pen ink, we used a J Herbin spiral glass dip pen (which has a tip similar to a medium-fine fountain pen nib) on French-made Rhodia dot pad paper. Again, please remember that different papers and nib sizes may produce different results.<\/p>\n<h2>What Sort of Ink Bottle Does TWSBI Use?<\/h2>\n<p>TWSBI 1791 fountain pen inks come in a small, standard 18 ml. frosted, rectangular glass bottle. The distinctive red TWSBI lid is a Pen Chalet staff favorite, and the company includes a secondary sticker reflecting the color of the ink on every ink bottle. Inks arrive in a simple cardboard outer box with a small foam protective layer on top and bottom.<\/p>\n<h2>How Much Does TWSBI Royal Purple Ink Cost?<\/h2>\n<p>TWSBI 1791 fountain pen inks are very economical. If you&#8217;re interested in value pricing, check the current discount pricing at Pen Chalet. At these prices, it&#8217;s not a stretch to consider purchasing the full set of six fountain pen inks in the TWSBI 1791 ink series.<\/p>\n<h2>How Did Royal Purple Ink Fair in the NEW 1 Dip Test?<\/h2>\n<p>TWSBI&#8217;s Royal Purple fountain pen ink performed well during our newest test, the 1 Dip. Test. We used the one dip test to see how far one dip could write on paper. Dipping the pen into TWSBI&#8217;s Royal Purple ink one time, we were able to easily write across the paper on all three writing samples with medium saturation. We used one dip per writing sample. Writing samples included: S, X, and scribble lines (see the photograph of the samples above).<\/p>\n<h2>How Fast Does TWSBI Royal Purple Ink Dry?<\/h2>\n<p>TWSBI Royal Purple fountain pen ink had a dry time of approximately 8-9 seconds, which is reasonably quick and appropriate as an everyday ink. (At Pen Chalet, we generally consider any dry time under 10 seconds to be reasonably fast, and appropriate as an everyday ink option).<\/p>\n<h2>Does Royal Purple Ink Bleed Through?<\/h2>\n<p>We saw very slight, almost imperceptible bleeding during normal use of Royal Purple fountain pen ink, and some additional, slight bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test (but only at the wettest points).<\/p>\n<h2>Was There Any Feathering?<\/h2>\n<p>We saw no feathering during normal use and almost no feathering during the water test.<\/p>\n<h2>How Does TWSBI Royal Purple Ink Stand Up to Water?<\/h2>\n<p>This week&#8217;s ink is not waterproof, but we always include a water test in the review, and it held up well. (For the water test, we let an ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before running a wet cotton swab over the sample). We saw some color smearing (expected for non-waterproof ink). The lines were completely legible with some slight line fade and almost no additional feathering at all. All in all, TWSBI&#8217;s 1791 ink series&#8217; Royal Purple ink held up very well to water.<\/p>\n<h2>Does Royal Purple Fountain Pen Ink Have Good Shading Traits?<\/h2>\n<p>We saw some slight shading during normal use of Royal Purple ink. If you have a nib that allows ink flow variation like a stub or italic nib, you may see more.<\/p>\n<h2>Final Conclusion on TWSBI Royal Purple Ink:<\/h2>\n<p>This week&#8217;s fountain pen ink, TWSBI&#8217;s 1791 Royal Purple, comes to you at a very economical price from Taiwanese TWSBI Pen Company. Known for lovely, but affordable, fountain pens, the company is well respected for being economically prudent, yet high quality.<\/p>\n<p>TWSBI&#8217;s Royal Purple ink is a beautiful, bright, vivid purple color. One of six inks included in TWSBI&#8217;s 1791 ink series, it&#8217;s packaged in a lovely and unique frosted ink bottle featuring the cool, distinctive, red Twsbi lid. The ink showed a very reasonable dry time (around 5 seconds) and would be a great everyday ink choice.
