This week\u2019s featured ink is included in an ink series named after a piece of ancient Japanese culture: the Japanese Manyoshu. The Japanese Manyoshu is an ancient compilation of Japanese poems that include frequent mentions of numerous flowers popular in the Japanese culture. Sailor created the Manyo ink series around the mentions of the various popular flowers, creating eight different inks based on different flowers featured in ancient poetry. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

During this week\u2019s ink review, we put Sailor\u2019s Manyo Yomogi to the test searching for the different characteristics and traits that fountain pen lovers look for when they\u2019re seeking a new ink for their favorite pens. Ink Review Testing Factors (to keep things scientific):<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We like to present a fair representation of the fountain pen inks we review, so we\u2019ll always include a section identifying other products used during the review alongside the week\u2019s featured ink. Think of our paper and pen as the \u201ccontrols\u201d in our review\/experiment. For our review of Sailor Manyo Yomogi <\/strong>fountain pen ink, we used a J Herbin spiral glass dip pen (with a tip similar to a fine-medium fountain pen nib) on Rhodia dot pad paper<\/a>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The results we saw came during the use described above. Remember that different papers and nib sizes may produce different results! <\/p>\n\n\n\n

What Sort of Ink Bottle Does Sailor Use?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sailor Manyo Yomogi is a\u00a0bottled fountain pen ink\u00a0<\/a>that comes in Sailor\u2019s new square ink well \u2013 a heavy-weighted 50 ml. bottle. We found the packaging and label to be simple, but elegant. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Much Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi Ink\u00a0Cost?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sailor Manyo Yomogi is a mid-range price fountain pen ink that is available from Pen Chalet at a discounted price.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Fast Does Yomogi Fountain Pen Ink Dry?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

Sailor Manyo Yomogi\u00a0fountain pen ink had a dry time of approximately 7-8 seconds with medium saturation. We consider any dry time under 10 seconds to be reasonably quick, and appropriate for daily use, so we would recommend Yomogi as an everyday ink.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi\u00a0Ink\u00a0Bleed Through?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During normal use of Yomogi fountain pen ink, we saw no bleeding. We did see some very slight bleeding during the heavy saturated cotton swab test, but it was only at the most saturated points, which were really wet. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Was There Any Feathering While Using Sailor Manyo Yomogi\u00a0Fountain Pen Ink?\u00a0<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

During normal use, we saw no feathering. We did see some slight feathering during the water test, though. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

How Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi Ink\u00a0Stand Up to Water?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

While this week\u2019s ink is not a waterproof fountain pen ink, we always include a water test in the review. (For the water test, we let an ink sample dry for about 3 minutes before running a wet cotton swab over the sample). The water test resulted in significant color smearing. This is completely expected with any dye-based ink. The lines were still legible, and we saw some slight feathering.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Does Sailor Manyo Yomogi\u00a0Fountain Pen Ink\u00a0Have Good Shading Traits?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n

We saw some really nice shading traits and are confident you will see them too if you have a nib that allows good ink flow variation. We recommend trying the stub or italic nib, if that’s what you’re looking to accomplish. Sailor Manyo Yomogi\u00a0fountain pen ink presented in a range from dark blue teal (leaning more towards blue rather than green-teal) to a lighter turquoise blue shade.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Manyo Yomogi <\/strong>fountain pen ink is a high performance, mid-range price ink from a well-regarded, historic Japanese pen an ink company.
