Pelikan Edelstein Garnet Ink was officially reintroduced this year. Formerly Pelikan’s 2014 ink of the year, Edelstein Garnet ink is a soft yet vibrant red with a hint of orange that is not overwhelming but shows up dark on paper. Most Pelikan ink of the year<\/a> colors are special edition inks which are not guaranteed to be incorporated into Edelstein’s line of regular edition inks. Therefore, the reintroduction of Garnet has many fountain pen ink enthusiasts hoping that other retired colors could also be coming back. Many are hopeful the retired Amethyst special edition Pelikan ink could be next to return to the shelves.<\/p>\n

Garnet is part of Pelikan’s luxury line of inks, the Edelstein brand. Edelstein inks quickly made a name for themselves for fantastic colors, unique bottles, and excellent presentation. And they live up to their stellar reputation. As we expect from Edelstein inks, Garnet is an easy flowing, easy to clean, luxury fountain pen ink. It’s no wonder that novices and connoisseur’s alike are drawn to this particular ink \u2013 loving all that it has to offer.<\/p>\n

Please note the following characteristics we have experienced while testing this German manufactured, high-quality fountain pen ink. You may find them useful when purchasing your next ink color:<\/p>\n

Testing Factors<\/h2>\n

Pen Chalet’s review of Edelstein Garnet ink was conducted using a J. Herbin glass dip pen on Rhodia dot pad paper. The glass dip pen has a tip that is similar to a fine-medium fountain pen nib. Please note that a different pen and paper may produce different results.<\/p>\n

Bottle Sizes<\/h2>\n

Pelikan Edelstein ink<\/a> comes in a very aesthetic ink bottle. It’s considered one of the best fountain pen ink bottles currently on the market. Rectangular shaped with a nice, wide lid, the 50 ml. Edelstein ink bottle is slightly concaved on all four sides. Its heavyweight makes it a good displayable ink well on a desk or credenza. The aesthetically pleasing bottle also boasts an efficient design. Users can grab the last few drops of ink when running low simply by placing the bottle on one of its four sides. Edelstein ink bottles are so popular that Pen Chalet carries empty Edelstein ink bottles whenever they are available.<\/p>\n

Cost<\/h2>\n

Pelikan Edelstein Garnet ink retails for $35 but is available at Pen Chalet discount fountain pen ink prices for $28.00. This pricing marks Edelstein Garnet ink as a high-mid range priced ink on the market.<\/p>\n

Dry Time<\/h2>\n

During the Pen Chalet Edelstein Garnet ink review, we found a very reasonable dry time of approximately 6-7 seconds. The quick dry time makes Edelstein Garnet ink an everyday ink option great at the home or office.<\/p>\n

Bleed Through<\/h2>\n

We experienced absolutely no bleeding during our review of Edelstein Garnet ink, even during the cotton swab test.<\/p>\n

Feathering<\/h2>\n

During normal use, we found no feathering at all while testing Edelstein Garnet ink. Even during our water test, we found almost no feathering at all using Rhodia dot pad paper.<\/p>\n

Water Test<\/h2>\n

We conducted a water test during our review of Edelstein Garnet ink. During the water test, we ran a soaking wet cotton swab over an ink sample after the sample dried for three minutes. The test resulted in some ink color smearing, but hardly any additional feathering or line distortion. Edelstein Garnet ink is not a waterproof or water-resistant ink.<\/p>\n

Shading<\/h2>\n

We found that Edelstein Garnet ink produces some nice shading under the right conditions depending on penmanship and the nib used. Edelstein Garnet ink produces a few variations of red; from a soft red with a very slight orange hue to a vibrant, dark red color.<\/p>\n

Conclusions about Pelikan Edelstein Garnet Ink<\/h2>\n

Edelstein Garnet ink has been around since 2014, but it hasn’t been on the market until it was reintroduced in 2019. There’s a reason Pelikan<\/a> introduced Edelstein Garnet as the 2014 ink of the year, and it’s the same reason they reintroduced it in 2019. It’s a fantastic color that ink enthusiasts love. Edelstein Garnet ink is a very pleasing, not overwhelmingly bold red color that shows up well on paper, has a fairly quick dry time and comes at a modest price. Its bottle and presentation are top-notch, making them excellent choices for ink wells after the Edelstein Garnet ink is gone. It is a perfect color choice when red ink is needed for that note, card, project, or underlining. Happy writing from Germany!<\/p>\n
