Platinum Cassis Black Ink is one of the 6 newly released \u201cclassic ink colors\u201d released in 2017. Platinum Classic inks<\/a> are a water soluble ink that is manufactured using traditional methods from plants and iron. The manufacturing of these \u201cclassic inks\u201d takes more time and no shortcuts are taken to produce Platinum\u2019s 6 new colors. Platinum\u2019s Cassis Black is one of these new classic ink colors.<\/p>\n

Platinum Cassis Black Ink Bottle<\/p><\/div>\n

Another interesting and unique quality of these new Platinum classic inks is when the ink first touches the\u00a0paper it will start off bright. Then as it starts to dry, due to the oxidation of the ink, the color will turn dark. Platinum Cassis Black ink is a deep burgundy red ink, once its dried and oxidized. However when Cassis Black first is applied to paper, it is a bright vibrant red color, almost a candy apple red, but\u00a0quickly turns dark. Platinum Cassis Black ink is documental ink as it is UV light resistant as well as resistant to water once fully oxidized.<\/p>\n

While testing Platinum Cassis Black ink we noticed the following traits, which you may find helpful:<\/p>\n

Testing Factors<\/h2>\n

We used a French made J. Herbin Spiral glass dip pen on Rhodia Dotpad N. 18 paper for this review. The glass dip pen<\/a> has a tip that is similar to a fine fountain pen nib.<\/p>\n

Bottle Size<\/h2>\n

Platinum Cassis Black ink comes in a standard sized 60 ml. Platinum glass ink bottle. The sides of the bottle are curved, not truly square, which is unique. Each Platinum ink bottle contains an internal ink reservoir which allows the user to get those last few drops of ink when running low.<\/p>\n

Cost<\/h2>\n

Platinum Cassis Black ink is a little more expensive than normal Platinum inks due to its manufacturing complexities. Each bottle retails for $25.00, but is available at Pen Chalet for a reduced price of $20.00 for the 60 ml. glass bottle.<\/p>\n

Dry Time<\/h2>\n

The dry time we experienced using Platinum Cassis Black ink with the glass dip pen was approximately 6-7 seconds. Obviously using a larger nib, you may experience a longer dry time. However, this dry time is acceptable for normal every day use of Platinum Cassis Black ink.<\/p>\n

Bleed Through<\/h2>\n

We did not experience any bleeding using Platinum Cassis Black ink during normal use or even during the cotton swab test at its wettest points on Rhodia Dotpad paper.<\/p>\n

Feathering<\/h2>\n

Platinum Cassis Black ink produced very nice crisp lines. Even during the water test, the lines remained clear and distinct without very much feathering.<\/p>\n

Water Test<\/h2>\n

We ran a wet cotton swab over a dried Platinum Cassis Black ink sample, which produced some color smearing, but no additional bleeding and no real feathering. The lines remained pretty clear and distinct. Therefore, although this ink is not waterproof, but it does have some water resistant characteristics.<\/p>\n

Shading<\/h2>\n

Platinum Cassis Black ink will produce some nice shading. Depending on your hand and nib used, the dark wet broad lines will become a deep dark red burgundy color where the lighter, think dry lines will remain a light a pinkish red color. This makes for some very interesting shading during use.<\/p>\n

Conclusion about the\u00a0Platinum Cassis Black Ink<\/h2>\n

Overall Platinum<\/a> has done a great job with their\u00a0new classic inks. Platinum Cassis Black ink has been a great seller and very popular. It shows up dark on paper and has some documental characteristics. The price is in the mid to upper range, but the uniqueness and characteristics makes this ink a worthwhile purchase. The color is a fantastic burgundy when dried and fun to use.<\/p>\n
