{"id":2078,"date":"2017-02-28T07:17:09","date_gmt":"2017-02-28T14:17:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/?p=2078"},"modified":"2026-02-17T11:47:43","modified_gmt":"2026-02-17T18:47:43","slug":"kaweco-pearl-black-ink","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/kaweco-pearl-black-ink\/","title":{"rendered":"Kaweco Pearl Black Ink"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Kaweco Pearl Black Ink by the German Pen Company\u00a0Kaweco, has been around for many decades. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/kaweco_pens\/\">Kaweco<\/a> is known for its fantastic functional pens, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/fine_pens\/fountain_pens\/kaweco_classic_sport_fountain_pen.html\">Kaweco Classic Sport<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/fine_pens\/fountain_pens\/kaweco_al_sport_fountain_pen.html\">Kaweco Al-Sport<\/a>, which has its history with military officers keeping a small compact pen in their shirt pocket. Kaweco, however, also produces some wonderful fountain pen ink. <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/ink_refills\/fountain_pen_ink\/kaweco_pens\/\">Kaweco fountain pen ink<\/a>\u00a0comes in 10\u00a0colors: blue, turquoise, blue black, grey,\u00a0 red, purple, green, orange, sepia brown and of course pearl black.<\/p>\n<p>Black ink is black ink, right? Not so. There has been much written on what makes a great black ink. A few fabulous black inks on the market are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/ink_refills\/fountain_pen_ink\/namiki_iroshizuku_fountain_pen_ink.html\">Pilot Iroshizuku<\/a> Take-Sumi, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/ink_refills\/fountain_pen_ink\/edelstein_bottled_ink.html\">Pelikan Edelstein<\/a> Onyx and Aurora Black. Each of these fountain pens ink are a true opaque dark black ink. There are other black inks that have wonderful characteristic as well, such as Noodler\u2019s Black, which not as opaque as some others is a bullet proof \u201cwaterproof\u201d, fast drying ink. Kaweco Pearl Black ink contains many of these same characteristics. It\u2019s a true black color, very dark and opaque, with maybe a hint more grey\u00a0than Aurora Black, The Kaweco black ink is also pretty quick drying ink, like the Noodler\u2019s black ink. Kaweco inks are known as premium quality inks but they are imported so you can expect to pay a little more for these inks.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_2079\" style=\"width: 780px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kaweco-Black-Ink.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2079\" class=\"size-full wp-image-2079\" src=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kaweco-Black-Ink.jpg\" alt=\"Kaweco Pearl Black Ink\" width=\"770\" height=\"1027\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kaweco-Black-Ink.jpg 770w, https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kaweco-Black-Ink-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kaweco-Black-Ink-768x1024.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.penchalet.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/02\/Kaweco-Black-Ink-624x832.jpg 624w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 770px) 100vw, 770px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-2079\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kaweco Pearl Black Ink<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We noticed a few of the following characteristics that you may find helpful when using Kaweco Pearl Black Ink:<\/p>\n<h2>Testing Factors<\/h2>\n<p>We used Rhodia Block N. 18 paper with a glass dip pen by J. Herbin for this review. The dip pen has a tip equivalent to a fine or extra fine nib.<\/p>\n<h2>Bottle Sizes<\/h2>\n<p>Kaweco inks come in a 30 ml. glass bottle that is very functional in its shape and design. It can actually be placed on its side and then even further on its neck in order to obtain those last few drops of ink.<\/p>\n<h2>Cost<\/h2>\n<p>Kaweco Pearl Black ink retails for $16.00, which is more than some non-premium inks on the market like Noodler\u2019s, Parker or Diamine inks, but cheaper than most premium inks such as Pelikan Edelstein and Pilot Iroshizuku Inks. Kaweco inks are a very good value for premium imported German ink.<\/p>\n<h2>Dry Time<\/h2>\n<p>Using the glass dip pen, we experienced a super quick dry time of about 3 second. Not as quick as Noodler\u2019s, but much quicker than most other black inks we have tested.<\/p>\n<h2>Bleed Through<\/h2>\n<p>We noticed zero bleeding using Kaweco Pearl Black ink, even when using an ink soaked nib on the paper.<\/p>\n<h2>Feathering<\/h2>\n<p>We experienced no feathering during normal use. However, feather was noticed during the water test.<\/p>\n<h2>Water Test<\/h2>\n<p>Kaweco Pearl Black ink is not waterproof. There was significant color smearing and some feathering during the water test, where we ran a soaking wet cotton swab over ink samples that had dried for approximately 3 minutes. This is where the grey in the ink really came out. The color smearing is similar to Pilot Iroshizuku Take-Sumi and Aurora Black inks.<\/p>\n<h2>Shading<\/h2>\n<p>Kaweco Pearl Black ink has a hint of grey color, thus can provide a small amount of shading with the right nib and handwriting combination.<\/p>\n<h2>Conclusion about the Kaweco Pearl Black Ink<\/h2>\n<p>Kaweco Pearl Black ink is a good overall ink, very dark opaque black color. It is fairly fast drying, at least with a small nib, but is not waterproof. The price is reasonable, not the most expensive, but not the cheapest either.
