Pelikan Historic Royal Blue Ink

The royal blue 4001 ink reflects Pelikan’s historic nature through a vintage styled label and box which was first used in 1897. The Pelikan Royal Blue ink itself has been tried and tested over the past century and continues to produce even ink flow and other characteristics which makes this ink one of the most respected fountain pen ink on the market today. Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink is a nice shade of royal blue, not to much purple and not too light. Pelikan 4001 fountain pen inks come in a variety of standard colors such as black, red, purple, green, orange and turquoise.

Please note the following traits of this historic German ink, that you may find helpful:

Testing Factors

We used a J. Herbin spiral glass dip pen on Rhodia dot pad paper for this review. The dip pen has a tip that is similar to a fine fountain pen nib.

Bottle Size

Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink comes in one size, a 2 oz. (62.5 ml.) in the standard Pelikan glass bottle. The bottle itself comes with a nice wide-mouthed opening and a large ribbed black lid with the Pelikan logo on the top.

Cost

Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink is an exceptional value at its retail value of $13.80 and even a better value at Pen Chalet, which we sell for only $12.00.

Dry Time

We found a dry time between 8-9 seconds while testing Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink. This is not super fast, but still quick enough for everyday office or home use.

Bleed Through

We found absolutely no bleeding while using Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink during normal use. Even during the cotton swab test, we found absolutely no bleeding on Rhodia dot pad paper.

Feathering

While testing Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink during normal conditions on Rhodia paper, we found no feathering at all.

Water Test

We conducted a water test where we ran a wet cotton swab over a sampling of Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink after letting it dry for 3 minutes. This test produced some feathering at the wettest points and some color smearing. Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink is not waterproof, however, most of the lines held up really well and were still distinct and legible and the color smearing was only slight.

Shading

Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink will produce some shading with the property fountain pen nib and hand. Shading is not one of the main characteristics Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink is known for.

Conclusion about the Pelikan Historic Royal Blue Ink

Pelikan Historic Royal Blue ink is a high quality historic German ink that is very economical, a fantastic royal blue color, and holds up quite well under during the water test. This particular historic labeling and box will only be available for a limited time; so don’t delay in making your purchase.

When I got into fountain pens many years ago, I ordered several bottles of Pelikan 4001 ink and was very happy with all of them. There are no Pelikan inks in my meager stash of ink, but I would like to change that. Winning this unique bottle of beautiful blue ink would be wonderful. I really like the packaging and ink. Thanks for the opportunity to win.

I have not used pelikan ink before I really love the violet ink they have and the blue. I hope to be able to try it out 🙂 I’ve heard so many good things about pelikan in general.
